There are four main types of keywords that can be used in Google Ads:
Broad match keywords: These are the most general type of keywords, and they allow your ad to show for a wide range of related search terms. For example, if you use the broad match keyword “shoes,” your ad could show for searches like “sneakers,” “running shoes,” or “women’s shoes.”
Phrase match keywords: These keywords are more specific than broad match keywords, and they allow your ad to show for searches that include the exact phrase you’ve specified. For example, if you use the phrase match keyword “running shoes,” your ad would show for searches like “buy running shoes” or “best running shoes,” but not “sneakers.”
Exact match keywords: These keywords are the most specific type of keywords, and they allow your ad to show only for searches that match the exact keyword you’ve specified. For example, if you use the exact match keyword [running shoes], your ad would only show for the search “running shoes” and not “buy running shoes” or “best running shoes.”
Negative keywords: These are keywords that you don’t want your ad to show for. For example, if you’re selling running shoes but you don’t want your ad to show for dress shoes, you can add “dress shoes” as a negative keyword.
Note that Google AdWords has been rebranded to Google Ads. And Google Ads Agency also has additional types of keywords like Dynamic Keywords and Smart Keywords.
